Epic City Project hand in (part 2)

I then started work on a city based around watermills. I thought it would be cool if a city had developed around a powerful water source that the city used to power a giant water mill. I started this city a little differently with some kind of problem solving sketches and research into how water mills actually work.

Then I started some mood painting again over some simple 3D models.

This was the final mood painting I did, and it was the hardest as I had a really detailed 3D model to work over. I tried to paint the city as if it was sunset the way pixar artists often do.

Below is the render I worked over.

I also wanted to paint the city in winter time too when perhaps the mills freeze and the landscape around the city changes. This was the funnest city I concepted and as a result I think it was the most developed of the four.

I also tried some more design work for the watermill city but it didn't really work out how I wanted it to.

I should have based the designs more around watermills, I dont think I pushed it far enough as a concept.

Towards the end of the project I was getting quite tired of environment work and I think it kind of shows in the work for the final city I did which was designed around a giant sewer.

I really like the idea of a giant turtle shell to be used as a building material though.

I wanted the city to have a shanty town vibe. I think the final painting shows that off best. The first painting I did worked better than the other two. I used some photos to help give me some texture to work off of in the image, which really gave me a stronger colour palette than in the other mood paintings I did.

In conclusion, I am happy to be finishing this project as it has made me realize I really need to improve my ability to paint landscapes. I learnt a lot from it however, and I think I have improved even just over the three weeks of intensive environment work, which is all that really matters.
